Behind the Scenes at le Bernardin: blacklight for crabshell
Posted by Xeni Jardin, July 9, 2009 4:21 PM

From a photo-essay "narrated" by chef Eric Ripert with delicious little details about what goes on behind the scenes at the world-famous, Michelin 3-star NYC restaurant Le Bernadin:

"When serving crab, it is very important to get out each tiny piece of shell that might have been left behind and that is a difficult job. To make the task easier, we inspect the crabmeat under a black light. The shells glow under this light and they are easy to pick out."

2nd Circuit Court of Appeals Upholds NY Statute Barring Direct Sale of Wine

A challenge from out-of-state wine retailers to New York state's prohibition on direct sales and delivery of wine to New Yorkers has been rebuffed by the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, which upheld the constitutionality of the state's laws.

Deciding a closely watched case that drew three intervenors and a number of amici, including The Beer Institute, the federal appeals court said New York's Alcoholic Beverage Control Law does not violate the commerce clause of the U.S. Constitution because it does not favor in-state sellers at the expense of out-of-state sellers.

Michael Jackson Wine Pairings

Grub Street
The Jacko Wine Pairing: Here’s How City Winery Sees It
6/26/09 at 1:07 PM
By: Daniel Maurer

Michael Dorf has e-mailed us to explain his Michael Jackson Tribute Pairing. To be fair, this isn’t the first such event City Winery has hosted — the venue’s website says a Stevie Wonder pairing is “back due to popular demand” — but yes, something about this does demand clarification. Over to Mr. Dorf.

Complex American Wine at a Price Easy to Pay

The Pour
By ERIC ASIMOV
Published: May 20, 2009

THE wine shops are filled with cheap American bottles. Almost all of them are palatable, well made and consistent. Such a bore!

Where are the inexpensive bottles that will fascinate and intrigue? Where are the wines that will keep you coming back for one more sip simply because the effort to penetrate the mystery of what’s in the glass offers so much pleasure?

What to Drink This Summer: Sparkling Rosé

Grub Street
By: Ben Leventhal

Four times in a week, sparkling rosé has been the gratis pour of choice among new restaurant sommeliers. Which, here on the cusp of summer, is as good a leading indicator as we need. If ’07 was the summer of rosé, and in ’08 it was the Grunner that flowed like water, then let it be said here and now: The summer of 2009 will be all about sparkling rosé.

Frugal Portland

“EVERYONE here looks great!” is not the kind of comment you hear often in Portland, Ore., where outfits seem chosen to match the cloudy skies, fabrics tend toward the waterproof, and anything with buttons counts as formalwear.

French Vintners Find E.U. Concoction Unpalatable

By Edward Cody

TARADEAU, France -- To the buttoned-down European Union bureaucrats in Brussels, the idea was simple: squeeze costs, conquer new markets, maximize profits. But to the vintners of Taradeau, a sun-splashed Provencal village 800 miles to the south -- and a world away, mentally -- it was an attack on their Mediterranean heritage, a crack in French civilization, a fraud against wine lovers everywhere.

And so it begins!

The wine club girls often email around wine-related articles. Why not post them all in a blog, so everything's easily accessible, archived, and we can all comment and share our thoughts!

I'll post some of our recent finds in upcoming posts...
